The Nuclear Cluster’s Executive director, Denis Kovalevich, announced on Friday, that one of the residents of the nuclear Cluster of the innovative centre "Skolkovo" - company "SuperOks-innovation" plans to begin the development of second generation high-temperature nano-constructed superconductors (BTSP-2), which can be manufactured by using different equipment..
”Thanks to the hybrid technology offered by the company, it is possible to make a specific type of a superconductor using this specific type of the equipment - for example, the rotors of generators, current limiters, cables with corresponding characteristics, both technological, and economic”, said Mr Kovalevich at a press-briefing during the 2nd International Power Conference, which took place in Moscow on the 1st to 2nd December and was partly organised by the Skolkovo Foundation.
According to Mr Kovalevich, the technology is interesting from an economic point of view. Thus, "SuperOks-innovations" plans within two years to lower the industrial price of the superconductors from 200-300 dollars to 50 dollars for a kilo-ammeter. Accordingly, this will enable this product’s application on a mass scale, for example, in generators for wind energy.
Besides the cost of superconductors, their application will but by almost half the cost of the installations in which they are installed, and also lower by eight times the weight of devices. According to Mr Kovalevich, "SuperOks-innovation" has only three competitors in the world and the wind power market in the USA alone is estimated at 300-400 GW. To ensure the successful development of and manufacture of the BTSP-2 "SuperOks-innovation", Skolkovo plans to create an engineering centre to apply superconductors in various industries, including pilot production of the material for the end user.
The company research is conducted by scientists of Moscow State University’s chemical faculty, Japanese research centres and Los-Alamos National Laboratory (USA).
The Skolkovo Foundation
